Hi all, I wanted to create a custom mount that attacks with the tail, with a bite, in short, that attacks several times and flies, maybe even a monster, but not necessarily.
As a custom mount is created, I didn't quite understand that. Thanks in advance,
Great Question.
There are two ways to go about it.
Mounts in general are armory equipment. These are good for your general horses and other types of mounts that once the rider is dead, are basically removed from the table. While there are standard mounts, there are also traits that can be taken to customize mounts further within reason.
In my Norkraag Dwarves for example my Goat/Ram mounts are done in this way. If the rider is killed the Ram is removed from the table. After all you don't want extra horses/rams running around the tabletop.
This is not the method I would suggest for your mounts since you want them to fight and not just be a method to move quickly across the tabletop.
Monsters of Myth and Legend. This is the way I would go. While this might be a mountain bear, a dinosaur, a manticore, a dragon, or something in-between this covers it.
Monsters X is the ability and is most often taken as a Class Trait. This class creates something entirely different than the rest of your faction and is great for creating just about any type of mount that you want. This takes up one of your class choices, but the mount also stays and fights if the rider is killed.
A great example is again the Norkraag Dwarves who do have bear riders. The bears are created with Monsters X taken from a class trait.
Monsters X works like this. Monsters X grants X new faction traits replacing any existing ones from your faction. It remains as class trait, but allows several new faction traits to be chosen. Your new creature is not related to the faction genetically. X number of traits can be taken from the Monsters of Myth and Legend and/or your Domain's traits. Note that there are also numerous methods to cross over into Biests, Reptilia, etc from Monsters.
This will create your mount of choice, and allow it to continue your fight if the rider is gone.
In contrast a normal warmount that is considered equipment goes away after the rider dies. After all who wants a number of horses running around the field that you have to control.
In our Norkaag Dwarves for instance. The mountain bear is created with Monster X so that it can continue the battle if the dwarf riding is killed for any reason. It makes armored bear quite the opponent.
Other things you could create..... Giants ridden by Orcs. (thinking Battle of the Five Armies), Raptor mounts (thinking dark elves), or even demonic monstrous mounts.
I hope this helps..... Monsters of Myth and Legend really opens the doors wide. Just be aware of the points cost..... those monsters get quite heavy in points. 😀
And very nice to be the first one here! I really like this forum layout and cannot wait to have it in full use.
The riders discipline determines the how many riders can be in the squad. 3 Riders and 3 mounts for a Discipline of 3.
The mounts discipline only matters if you decide to run them on their own without a rider.
Hi Gary, I will disturb you more one time (do not promise it will be the last :p), when calculating the size of the squad (discipline based) I must include the mounts and the rider, right? example: I have a level 1 mount class, and a level 2 rider class, in a battle, let's say that riders have Discipline 3, which through the rules, I discover that they can have a Squad Size of 3 (if they were level 1, could 6), what would be the account of riders and mounts here? 3 riders and 3 mounts, or 3 riders or mounts? does the level of the mounts influence something? and if they were level 2 mount and level 1 rider, how would you calculate?
ok, I think I understand. I create the monster as a normal class for my faction, I just need to use the Monstrous Beast trait to use the monster traits. Then I get some trait that has the Mount ability, so that any other class of mine can get it as a mount.
my fault. I hadn't read the mount skill. in fact I thought the opposite of her, because as she appears in the cavalry traits and light cavalry, I thought you needed to have her to have a mount.
but, here comes another doubt: if I do a Knight with the trait cavalry, can other classes ride my Knight? LOL
The one missing element that would of explained it further is the ability "Mount"
After this any other traits you wish. The only restriction is that the rider must be one size smaller and other than the mount, any of your Classes may use the new monster as a mount.
For Example: I am going to make a new monstrous mount while playing a Humanoid faction.
Level 1 Class is going to take Monstrous Beast as it's class trait for 20pts. This gives us Monster 4. This is our only class trait we will take when creating this class and might expand upon it later.
However we have 4 Faction Traits to take from either the Humanoids or Monster of Myth and Legends. I want to create Monster for a mount.
Faction Traits
Traits from Monsters of Myth and Legend
1. Heavy War Monster 12pts: Mount, Trample 1
2. Giant Monster 12pts: Increase Toughness 1, Strength 1, Increase size 2, decrease discipline
3. Amazing Strength 24pts: Increase Strength 3, Decrease Defense 1
From the Humanoid Domain
4. Chainmail- Medium Armor 10pts
Class Traits: Monstrous Beast 20pts
Stat line
Strength 7 Toughness 4 (6 with armor) Movement 3
Martial 3 Ranged 2 Defense 2
Discipline 1 Willpower 3 Command 2
Mtn 5 Rtn 5 Morale 4 (relying upon riders here)
Wounds 2 Attacks 1 Size XL
Bite
Points 78pts
Toughness 6 is very durable. Eventually I would add something to aid in it's attacks although 1 attack and having trample is pretty good. If your rider is in something like plate armor which would reduce the models movement, a mount like this make a lot of sense. When this monster attacks its going to hurt with that strength 7 giving it a Combat Situation of 4 when charging into melee.
Could make this guy cheaper. But I like him built this way.
As to your last question... The rider would be able to act and fight from on top of the mount. You would use his discipline for squad size and if one or the other is killed they can both keep on fighting. So a mounted warrior would get all his attacks and the mount would get all of it's attacks. Medium sized models could even double up on this mount both getting to use their actions as you smash into enemy lines.
Something fun to do in a game with a mount like this.
Have a hero join up with the squad on one of the mounts. After a successful melee, have him leave the squad to go where he needs to! like get an objective, kill someone, etc. One person playtesting I know in-house loves to use heroes or Level 3 Class individuals in this manner.
some doubts regarding your answer:
1 - if i do it as a mount, can i choose to add any trait to it? how it works? how many can i? do i add all the points of the chosen traits? 2 - if I do it as a monster, as I understand it, in this option there is no role of the rider, the traits are added directly to the class, and the rider would be an abstraction at the table, right? or got it wrong?
