Hi there,
as mentioned in my last post I'm quite new to Genesys and am trying to create a swamp frog faction based on the Biest domain. In this topic I'd like to show what I have built so far. To be honest I find the rules for creating a faction difficult to read and I usually understand rules very fast...
Note: Since this is WIP and I have questions regarding rules I think this forum section is more fitting than the faction showroom. But correct me if I'm wrong here.
So here is what I have so far:
Changelog
21/08/19 changed faction traits; removed pathfinder & agile
changed mutt heritage to increase strength & toughness
changed warrior-class wildling bonus to defense
Faction: Swamp Gurunda (temporary name)
Domain: Biest
Kingdom: none
Traits:
6pts - Marsh - Combat Survival
6pts - Marsh - Swamp Rat
4pts - Breeding - Heavily Mixed (Mutt) Heritage
0pts - Omnivore - Field Scavanger
Base Species Characteristics:
Strength 3 Toughness 3 Movement 3
Martial 3 Ranged 2 Defense 3
Discipline 2 Willpower 2 Command 2
MTN 7 RTN 6 MORALE 4
Wounds 1 Attacks 1 Size M
Abilities:
Infiltrate 24"; Scavanger 1
Base Cost: 16pts
My faction is treated as a lesser faction, since it has no kingdom. To outlast the dangerous environments they rely on guerillia tactics to hunt or repel invaders of ther territory. Without existing knowledge of crafting metal they scavenge the remains of invaders to bolster up for future conflicts.
These are the models I want to use for now:
The common warriors will wield spear+buckler or 2 melee weapons. The larger infantry (Bulls) look like level 2 for me, but I miss the additional wound on that level, so I'm open for suggestions...
The salamanders on the left will be level 2 monsters (see below), which are then ridden by the level 1 warriors. The archer is supposed to be my first "hero" on level 3. My faction will not have ranged weapons except for maybe javelins. But from the Invaders they have seen the effectiveness of bows. Such a mighty weapon is reserved for the exalted warriors, because of the rarity to gather them in good condiction. For the fat mage and the demonfrog I have no ideas yet. The demonfrog will most likely be a level 5 monster and the fat mage a level 3 hero-type, but I have to read more rules first :)
Classes:
Level 1 - Warrior
4pts - Wildling - +1 Defense
Characteristics:
Strength 3 Toughness 3 Movement 3
Martial 3 Ranged 2 Defense 4
Discipline 2 Willpower 2 Command 2
MTN 8 RTN 7 MORALE 4
Wounds 1 Attacks 1 Size M
Cost without gear: 20pts
Level 2 - Salamander
20pts - Monstrous Beast
-> 12pts - Heavy War Monster
-> 12pts - Gigantism
-> 8pts - Monstrous Sprinter
-> 3pts - Heavy Hide
10pts - Increase Characteristics - +1 Movement
4pts - Fierce Intensity
Characteristics:
Strength 4 Toughness 4 Movement 4
Martial 3 Ranged 2 Defense 3
Discipline 1 Willpower 3 Command 1
MTN 6 RTN 7 MORALE 5
Wounds 2 Attacks 2 Size L
Cost without gear: 106pts
That's it what I have so far. I'm open for comments and corrections if I did anything wrong :)
I just bump this one because I still have some open questions in my previous post :( What I also still have issues with is the multiplication of base-race cost. The salamanders for example are extremely expensive. If I would create them as a lvl1 class instead with wildling instead of the stat increase I would only loose Fierce Intensity and 1 attack, but they would cost only 59pts. Is the additional attack really worth about 50pts? The points calculation really does not make much sense to me... might be that I'm just used to competitive games, but points should still be fair to have an entertaining game. It works well for lvl1 classes, but when creating a higher class the points-increase just never matches the benefits you gain... I'm open for clarification here, because it kinde stops me from continuing :(
Thank you very much for your detailed feedback! :D
Why I didn't increase Discipline is my thinking of the story. I don't think that my frogs are really disciplined to fight in organized groups. They will more likely scatter around and attack on opportunity, rather than strategic planning (even though I will most likely play them with lots of strategic planning xD). But I will drop Willpower and go with Strength and Toughness for now.
I will update the original post with the changes to my faction and add a changelog to follow along the changes.
With the region traits I'll correct my error and drop Pathfinder and Agile. I will keep my infiltrate a faction-wide trait though, since I really like the idea to have everything scattered before the game begins. My monsters will of course lack this trait, but how is it with mounts and riders? If the rider has infiltrate and the mount does not, can they infiltrate or not? Swamp Battle Training is quite expensive and I would leave it out for now as well.
The characteristic increase you mentioned for level 2... is it valid to increase wounds? Because it say I can increase 1 characteristic and in the core rules it is said that each model has 9 characteristics (physical, skill, knowledge), so wounds are not part of them. They are just "other stats". So I don't think it is valid to increase wounds with the class options.
Furthermore the level 2 options says "You may take an additional increase characteristic ...". Additional to what? Can level 2 classes also take Wildling from level 1?
And then I want my mount to be faster than infantry, or else there is not much sense in taking a mount :P That's why it needs the +1 Movement in my eyes.
Regarding the Bulls go for level 3... I'm only allowed to create 2 level 3 classes and 1 level 5. With Demonfrog, Mage and Archer they are all used up. Although it is tempting to make Bulls powerful level 3 :)
And the demonfrog could become some kind of deity to my faction, who will be worshipped or they get eaten. Feed the demonfrog well and he will be your friend ;) so he will be my level 5 I think.
I like where this is going. Guerilla swamp frogmen is not something that would've ever crossed my mind.
Starting out... yeah, not picking a Kingdom kinda whammies you right out of the gate. Your stat setup isn't the worst, though, especially with Mutt to pick up the values that can't afford to be low. You've also built, in my opinion, an extremely powerful Ability into your base race: Infiltrate. Stalling out your deployments and getting to dictate the terms of engagement is huge, and it fits nicely with your theme.
I would change the Characteristics affected by Mutt from Strength and Willpower to Toughness and Discipline. My reasoning for this is that not having easy access to extra Wounds means every save counts, and Discipline boosts both your squad size and the number of items each frog can carry. You could convince me to keep the Strength bump instead of Toughness though, Strength 3 is a sort of sweet spot that's prime for buffing and isn't easily knocked down to 0 to completely nullify attacks.
Alright, let's get the single error out the way. You've taken two Regions for your Biest faction, this is not allowed normally. You'd have to take a Trait with Regional Adaptation to do so. For what it's worth, I did like the Swamp Battle Training you had before, bumping your Martial up to 4(and MTN to 8) brought to mind the image of a skillful but perhaps not so hardy race.
One last note on the base race. I know you mentioned feeling like your dudes were expensive, and they are. It hurts, but consider cutting at least one Trait from your selection; my choice would be either Agile or Swamp Rat. Every single model probably doesn't need Infiltrate, although as mentioned it is strong, and if they are all moving up the board pre-Turn 1, how much are they going to be moving from that point? These two Traits are implying different activities for your models, and while it isn't fundamentally a bad idea, they simply cost points that might be better spent on more bodies.
As for classes, I like how your equipment is made cheap, so your Level 1's absolutely check out. The Lv 2 mount wants its Increase Characteristic option to go on its Wounds, pretty much any Biest Level 2 does. Any other Level 2's should probably be specialists, perhaps riders for the mounts or beast drivers. Level 3 gets pretty spicy, and I could easily see those 'bulls' as huge shock troops. Finally, it's a tossup for me who's in charge: the mage or the demonfrog. The former makes more sense, but the latter opens up some interesting paths for development...
That's all I've got for now. Again, very neat concept you've got to go with those models, looking forward to seeing this flesh out!
