I found Machinist in the ability index at the back of the book but I can't find how a class would get access to it. Where is it?

So multiple ways.
You can make a monster humon and give it fey hybrid 2
Take healing sphere with forbidden lore which would open up the sphere for you entire faction.
You'll need first aid or some other healing ability with Machinist.
